New research indicates that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
